She's gotten home (only  a few days ago.)  We tried putting in my T-Mobile
SIM and nothing.  Didn't work at all. However, she checked with a friend of
hers and apparently, in Germany, she can buy (or rent?) a SIM that will
work in the phone.  She'll actually want to be doing that, as she'll be
making a trip to Germany in the next few months.
I haven't followed it up any further than that.
