Speaking of which, and only hijacking the thread ever so slightly,
will my European iPhone be able to roam in Japan? I don't know what
kind of radios iPhones have any more, nor do I know what networks
exist in Japan versus Europe.

For awhile there, didn't GSM as deployed in the US operate on
different frequencies to GSM in Europe.

This is enough to make one's poor head spin.
