This topic was discussed on The List a while ago and I thought the story 
of a Kickstarter project that crashed spectacularly would be of

Incidentally, if you've purchased a telescope for your kids, the top 
link on eyepiece selection is timely and informative.  Our local school 
district just did the annual Summer Camp run to JAXA in Tsukuba and my 
daughter is looking up at the sky again.  She has a "better grade" 
telescope, now but it is good to know we can turn it into an improved 
model for little money.
