But I'd argue that Joe Average never had much. You're a geek, so
you're coming from a different tradition. But think about peasants in
the olden days. Most of them weren't educated and didn't care even
about understanding farming deeply enough to develop more efficient
techniques for same.

Think about factory workers from the Industrial Revolution on. Most of
them would prefer to go to work, be bored for eight hours, then come
home to have a few beers and watch some football.
