Sure, but Dropbox is also a lot worse than several things you don't have to cook up for yourself for most purposes I can think of. What Dropbox has going for it is that it's trivial to get started. If the trivial is all you need, fine, but it rarely stays that way, and then Dropbox gets *in* your way. Anyway, that was my experience. True, Charles phrased his question in terms of "you could cook up your own software", but we're discussing Linux here. I think it's implicit that *somebody* would share.
