As long as distributions are concerned, I have good experiences with modified SysRescueCD. But a I am a big Gentoo promoter (and it is based on Gentoo), so take that with caution if you need to heavily modify it. Recently I build a firewall/NAT box running entirely from two USB sticks, one is write protected (Buffalo makes these). Cheers, Kalin.
