Dear TLUG,
Can anyone recommend a good and relatively cheap laptop repair shop in
Tokyo? I've 4 year old IBM Thinkpad with Ubuntu that has been serving
me very well and this morning the screen decided to give out; I get a
picture but it is so faint as to be useless. I'm hoping that replacing
the screen won't be too expensive, though I have a bad feeling that it
might be almost as much as buying a replacement used laptop ...
Thanks in advance!

Hi JC,
I have seen a lot of Thinkpad parts and screens on sale in the back streets of Akihabara. However, are you really sure you want to try to patch it up? I personally had to deal with the pain of parting with a quality laptop over monitor issues, but the expense of keeping it around is usually not worth the hassle. You're looking at a minimum of 30,000 yen for the repair. (That's what it cost me when a friend's cat destroyed my NEC Laptop monitor)
