I was appalled to notice on a recent trip to some shops in Akihabara that some of them had stickers on five-year old computers saying that they were (from memory - I think this was the exact wording though): "Certified Microsoft Refurbished". Which would suggest that our dear friend MS has been terrorizing shops selling used equipment - getting them to go along with the MS tax even on old junk used machines! > http://www.faith-go.co.jp/pc/note/ > http://www.pc-koubou.jp/pc/notebook.php > http://www.twotop.co.jp/lineup/?cat=37 I'm glad you sent this. I've bought BTO machines from both DOS Para and Faith, and I was much happier with the service for and quality of the machines I got from Faith. The walk-in shop I used to go to disappeared however, so I'm happy to see that they haven't vanished into thin air, but just have moved (or closed a branch?). According to their site, they're here: 東京都千代田区外神田3-1-16 ダイドーリミテッド本社ビル1階 TEL/03-3526-3285 営業時間/11:00〜20:00 FAX/03-3526-3286 > I'm considering getting a laptop from one of these places, as the > specifications and price seem reasonable and within my budget. I've never bought an OS-less laptop before. I'd certainly be interested in doing so however. The last Lenovo laptop I bought included the MS tax, and so that money was wasted when I reformatted the hard drive and put in a proper OS (Linux). Lyle
