Re: [tlug] ARM Netbooks Will Only Run ****x (was Re: Unix's 40th Birthday)

Microsoft's worry is, who will be running [Microsoft BloatOS du jour]
on their notebooks? Businessmen, probably. But with a little bit of
peripheral magic you can go a long way with just a keitai nowadays.
So maybe not. Many of my colleagues have stopped carrying notebooks
anymore. They don't need them for email, they don't need them to take
notes and organize things, because they can do that with their
Blackberries and iPhones. They don't need them for presentations,
they carry their .ppt or .pdf presentations on memory sticks, and
pretty soon you'll be doing that with your Android, no? A lot of
business could go the same way.

For one , 'business' is a massive market and for MS likely more lucrative than the average user as they sell plenty of Office, SqlServer, Sharepoint and so on into it. With most netbooks shipping with XP they're getting a slice of that pie, and with Azure they hope to claim back a little 'cloud' mojo back. I think 2009 is another pivotal year for MS.

All that said, WinMobile is horrific and isn't due for a refit till v7 (ironically) in 2010. In that time it's true a lot of other phones Apple/RIM/Android & Jp manufacturers will be having a bull run. Personally I do ~80% of personal mail on this iPhone, but I still have a need for a laptop and desktop. Anyone here purely living on a phone/ netbook?

Graham
