I wouldn't of course. As I think I've mentioned before, in many senses
I'm a Bear of Very Little Brain.

In this sort of case, I'd make an attempt to figure out how to set up
the build system of such a project so that you can build two different
versions of the code from the same source: the DMA version, with one
set of drivers, and the non-DMA version with a different (but probably
overlapping) set of drivers. If that got to expensive, I'd probably just
branch.

It's not as if I object to branches in all cases. I just think that
they generally should not be your first choice for trying to deal with
things.
