You can boot Linux in single-user mode by appending "single" to your
boot parameters. But as this will attempt to mount your root
filesystem (albeit in readonly mode, IIRC), you probably are on the
right track with the  rescue CD.

That error almost always means a hardware problem. Filesystem
inconsistencies would not produce buffer I/O errors, AFAIK. The fact
that you can boot Windows probably just means that the data Windows
needs to boot just so happens to be on a part of the drive that is OK.

Still, as Alexei says:

Try fsck; it probably won't hurt anything.
