You can boot Linux in single-user mode by appending "single" to your boot parameters. But as this will attempt to mount your root filesystem (albeit in readonly mode, IIRC), you probably are on the right track with the rescue CD. >> When attempting to boot, there are a long string of error messages. >> What I can see now is: >> >> ide: failed opcode was: unknown >> Buffer I/O error on device hda3, logical block 198764 > > I guess that the hard drive itself is OK since you can boot Windows That error almost always means a hardware problem. Filesystem inconsistencies would not produce buffer I/O errors, AFAIK. The fact that you can boot Windows probably just means that the data Windows needs to boot just so happens to be on a part of the drive that is OK. Still, as Alexei says: > Lyle, what happens when you boot Kubuntu live-cd and try to mount the > Linux partition? It might also help to try to run fsck being booted to > Kubuntu and see if it can fix something. Try fsck; it probably won't hurt anything. > Btw, taking an occasion to introduce myself - my > name is Alexei Anisimov, I am from Novosibirsk, Russia.
