I've got the same (v10) libflashplayer.so in all the usual places.

I had the brilliant idea of starting FF up from a console rather than
from the panel, so I could see the error messages. Sho-nuff:

LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library
/usr/lib/flash-plugin/libflashplayer.so [libpangocairo-1.0.so.0:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory]

So the same problem that is stopping me using FF3 is nobbling FF2's use of
the flash plugin. I guess one of those periodic updates of FF2 brought in the
requirement to have libpangocairo-1.0.so.0.

I have looked around at the possibility of installing libpangocairo-1.0.so.0.
and it's shaping up as not really feasible with my current distro as so
many other things would need updating is well. I'll comment more on this
responding to David.

Anyway, it's good to know why flash is not working. I'll stop bashing my
head on that particular brick wall now.

Cheers

Jim
