Two data points, not worth drawing a line and calling it a trend:
Sadly, it's not to be found at my university. In general, I don't
find a lot of the hacker mentality among Japanese academics, whether
directed at computers or at their own fields.
I also find the comparison between the number and quality of open
source fonts for Chinese and Korean vs. Japanese distressing.
