Say this.

    $ uname -a
    NetBSD lucky.cynic.net 4.0_STABLE NetBSD 4.0_STABLE (THINKPAD-4-$Revision: 980 $) #0: Thu Jan 10 16:06:42 JST 2008  cjs@example.com:/u/netbsd/build/i386-4.2007-12-31/obj/u/netbsd/src-4/sys/arch/i386/compile/THINKPAD-4 i386
    $ /bin/sh
    bind: Invalid command `rl_complete'.
    $ cd /hoogleblats && echo honk
    cd: can't cd to /hoogleblats
    honk
    $ /bin/ksh
    $ cd /hoogleblats && echo honk
    /bin/ksh: cd: /hoogleblats - No such file or directory
    honk
    $

Note that your ksh is probably AT&T ksh, not pdksh.

And I did verify that the chdir(2) system call does indeed return the
error codes.
