TOFU is not a good way to communicate…
I learned in my latin classes that latin was a language of scholars which you would have only heard in the senate and similar places. "Colloquial latin" (" for I don't know how it is actually called) which was used by the people would have been far more similar to todays Italian than to latin itself.
