I am having a similar-sounding problem with a box I set up for my aunt, also Ubuntu. She's accessing the net via a USB wifi device to the house wifi network (p/w protected). And (most of the time) Firefox refuses to load pages. However Konqueror works fine. So I've got her using Konqueror. Did you try another browser? Occasionally, I'll load a page in Konq and then right away try the same page in FF, and FF will load it. But without that "priming", FF sees nothing. I've planned to post to Ubuntu or Mozilla forums to try to figure out the problem, but haven't gotten around to it. I'd be happy to hear if anyone here has a clue about this, or if you figure it out. If so, please let me know! (another) Dave
