There's nothing preventing you from doing so from a technical point of view provided you use the correct command line options when setting up the filesystem[*] on the device (hence the error message thrown back at you). However, since these things are "meant" to behave like hard disks when used by the operating system, they "ought to" go the whole 9 yards in that behaviour and have a partition table (and partitions) just like a hard disk. [*] - I hesitate to use the term "format" here because you aren't actually formatting anything in the real sense of the term. -- G.
