It is an economics problem (sound familiar? most problems are), of course. If your CAPTCHA is not one of the big ones, it won't really be worth anyone's time to break it. That is why Jeff Atwood suggests copying the techniques used by Google and Yahoo!, but implementing it yourself and adding some variation. That way, you don't automatically get cracked when the bots break the big boys' CAPTCHAs, but you do get to use their trial and error to your benefit. -- Cheers, Josh
