[tlug] Booting LINUX from an external hard disk

The O'Reilly SuSE LINUX book says:
> "How to use Windows boot loader to dual boot:
> 1. Write 1st stage boot loader to root directory
> 2. Boot system using rescue disk
> 3. Peel off 1st 512 bytes of LINUX and write them to a file:
> # dd if=/dev/hda2 of=linux.bin bs=512 count=1
> 4. Put this file on a floppy or memory stick.
> 5. Boot into Windows and copy it to the Windows partition.
> 6. Modify boot.ini to add
> C:\linux.bin="LINUX"

I wonder if anyone knows if this works for
dual booting to LINUX on an external hard drive?
