I just found if I start it as: LANG=ja_JP.UTF8 jedit (*) then I can start scim. And menus, error messages, etc. stay in English, so that is a workable solution for the case of jedit. (Curiously, giving locale language as UTF8 is fine even though I'm using jedit to edit shift-jis files.) Darren *: In a gnome launcher give the command as: bash -c "LANG=ja_JP.UTF8 jedit"
