Chuck, have you tried XEmacs as well? I am curious if you find XEmacs 21.5.x acceptable as well.
I pretty much stick with what's available in Debian (Testing) packages, and since XEmacs 21.5 is not up there yet, I haven't yet run it on Linux. I tried the Windows version, and had poor success with mixed international font displays in Unicode (Utf-8). And since (1) XEmacs really can't be used as an XML editor, and (2) since its macros run considerably slower on the very large text documents that I deal with (usually around 10 mb) I sort of gave up on it for now. When 21.5 becomes formally released as a Debian package, I'll certainly give it a try, since there are certain things about the function of XEmacs that I like better than Emacs.
