Not really. It's just a version of the standard radio "cart" (meaning cartridge tape) system used for commercials and suchlike for a long time until digital recording came in. The main difference was that the carts were stereo, with two tracks, and sometimes a very thin time-code track in the middle.

It's the usual case of a reasonable technology being pushed to its
limits; the audio quality was quite fine until they reduced the speed
and quartered the track width. But then again, who would want to buy one
of those if they only held half a song? :-)
