The more "bits" there are between the O/S and the disk, the more likely
it is that there will be a failure somewhere.

You really want to look into a USB/SATA converter and eliminate the
IDE/SATA adapter in the middle. I'm not saying that this'll work,
guaranteed, but I am saying that it's more likely to work.

USB/SATA converters are ten a penny now - doubtless because it's serial
communication both sides and therefore simpler than USB/PATA.
