This is true. Ubuntu might not be ported to ppc, but Debian is... and since Ubuntu is based on Debain, it shouldn't be too difficult for you to get the hang of it when your friend needs a little help.
I had a brief encounter with Gentoo Linux on an older ppc Powerbook some time ago. Be aware that some things (namely the wireless card) may not be supported, or at least may be difficult to get running. Or maybe not, I tried it a long time ago.
If it's an airport extreme (b/g-WLAN-card) it could be a real problem to get that to run. For the airport-card (b-only) drivers exist afaik.
