Thanks for the tools and the explanations.

I haven't yet had a recurrence of the problem, so I can't report back 
that I've had success in identifying the process that's causing it.

However, I'm sure it will happen again, as it does every week or so. 
When it does, I'll apply the information from here and report how it goes.
