I looked at Laser printers at Bic Camera, but wasn't sure of linux compatibility (or rather, the only ones that explicitly said either linux or postscript support were big and expensive).
I have not owned an ink jet since the late nineties. I always try to buy laser printers that "speak" post script, and have usually bought printers with built-in network print servers. However, I used to own a Brother HL 1440[1]. It worked without any hassles under Linux whatsoever.
My current printer is a Dell 1710n. Which is basically a Lexmark with Dell badges, and again works without issue.
If I need colour (which I rarely do) I take my files to a print shop and pay per page.
