I don't use KDE, I use Gnome (with Beryl if that makes any difference), 
but I do use Amarok, which is KDE based.

So I gave your recommended command a shot.

dave@example.com:~$ sudo killall artsd
artsd: no process killed

I guess that means artsd was not getting in the way.
