Thanks everyone for their helpful advice in this thread.

From what I have read, it seems that the bash shell script might be 
what I'm after. Although I think I'm likely to have quite a few 
questions about it.

In any case, I just wanted you to know that after a few weeks of 
distraction, I read through all the advice given, and I appreciate very 
much all the input.
