Thanks for your input and the suggestion about using ADSL.  I'll contact my 
ISP at KDDI and see what they have to offer.

By the way, do most or all of the Linux users here in JA use softmodems to 
connect to the internet??

Are the so-called hardmodems available here in JA?  Here in Fukui, haven't 
found a store that carries such animals!!
