I don't remember if the original post had this gcc switch in it, but
profiling gives a big performance penalty, use with care!
In case you want to use other tools to find such "slowness" problems,
take a look at sysprof (there are others too). It will show you the time
spent in the kernel too. This can be an advantage so you can see how much
time the kernel is waiting for the hardware to respond.
