Thank you for responding.
Sheepishly, I have to say that it's working now, for no reason that I
can discern. I am sure that all of yesterday my Palm was not working,
and there were no ttyUSB* files in the /dev directory.
And then this morning, when I got up and tried your commands, it looked
like there was a Palm device attached, and there were /dev/ttyUSB* files
present.
I'm baffled. Could a long wait have helped?
