HI everyone,
Found a neat tool that will do exactly what I was looking for regarding temperature monitoring and auto-shutdown: the GkrellM monitor. Has a setting that monitors CPU temp from /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/temperature, then at warning threshold perform some task, then at critical level perform another task (eg. shutdown -h now). Plus it looks nifty. Check it out if you are interested:
