No one seems to have mentioned it, but based on my ancient experiences 
selling Japanese hardware in Akihabara, I'd guess the Japanese 100V caused 
it to overheat. So much for that universal power supply. That the chemicals 
burned with such vigor is not too surprising. I hope no one inhaled any of 
the lithium... (Actually I met Michael Dell once, about 20 years ago.)
