The cost of maintaining and replacing fans is insignificant. 

OK, add about a whopping 10 yen per month. 

If you pay attention to them, which you can do when they are at 
your own place, the fans will let you know about impending 
failures before damage occurs. Dying fans can be easily 
relubed.

The best way to extend the life of hard drives is to keep them cool. 
One usually does this by blowing plenty of _fresh_ air over them.
