Steve was saying that everyone is right: the iPod can function as a
standard USB mass storage device, but it has extra capabilities that
require (as of now) Apple's proprietary drivers. Perhaps someone will
reverse-engineer the protocol, perhaps not.

The bottom line for users of OSs for which the drivers are not (yet?)
available (i.e. everything but Mac OS and Windows) is that they must
settle for the mass storage-only functionality.
