Re: [tlug] Slightly messed up Japanese input [SOLVED]
Botond,
Thanks for your continued help.
Dave, once you got that far, you can also have a look at the uim
documents...
For openoffice, you need to use uim-xim.
I'm not sure about uim-xim, but the UIM web site gave a couple clues
that made it seem like there was an additional "gtk" package I needed. I
didn't quite get what that was, but with some additional 'net searching,
I got the impression it was some kind of Gnome to OpenOffice link.
I searched in Synaptic with the terms "OpenOffice" and Gnome, and found
"openoffice.org-gnome". Installed it, and, quite awesomely, I can input
Japanese in OpenOffice! Sweet.
That left the problem of the [shift]+[space] vs [ctrl]+[space] input
switching. I'm happy to report that I have that solved. Looking back
over this thread to where I briefly had that working, it seemed that
finding and deleting the .uim file that seems to get automatically
created had something to do with that.
I deleted that file, and decided, what the heck, I deleted the .uim.d
directory as well. When I right clicked on the icon thingy in the top
right corner to get "preferences", it had reverted to defaults. I then
set about putting in the hot key options I wanted. And they seem to have
stuck.
I think that means I've solved the Japanese input problem. Somehow it
feels so precarious, because it was so circuitous to get it set up.
So, until it breaks again, thanks guys for helping me get this one
sorted. Thanks to both Scott and Botand specifically, and TLUG generally.
Onto the Palm Pilot...
