I use GAIM -

It allows you to log into multiple IM/chat networks
simultaneously, including Yahoo IM, AOL Instant Messenger, MSN
Messenger, Jabber, IRC, more.

It supports Japanese character data fine, including for your
"away/busy" messages and such.
