I need to play my Japanese DVDs here, and my Japanese PlayStation2 is getting increasingly old (not that it is a good DVD player, anyway). 2. I need to be able to play my American DVDs in Japan if / when I move there (knock on wood, baby, knock on wood!) 3. I need to be able to have backup copies of my DVDs, in case the original gets scratched (even the smallest of scratches in the TOC area can really play hell with DVD players) 4. I would like to be able to loan out DVDs to friends, but I have a policy of not loaning original media (basically because there seems to be a 15-20% chance of never getting said media back!) *5*. (the most important) It pisses me off that the cartels dictate to me, the paying consumer of their products, that I must buy the same movie over and over again, on different media, just to conform with their region scheme 6. It drives me crazy when I cannot figure a technical problem out :) > If the goal is to work with the encoding tools and general tinkering, that I can > understand completely. :-) Yes, that is a big part of it! > In regards to your original question, alas no, I don't know of any > tool off the top of my head that fits your description. I will keep combing FreshMeat, but it is looking more and more like I might have to roll my own solution, or at least modify one of the StreamDVD or Transcode tools to do what I want. I am actually interested in media formats, and have written a tool that does interesting things to WAV files (really a special case of AVI). But I just do not have a lot of time right now, and am hoping to avoid reinventing the wheel if there is already a good enough wheel out there. Cheers, Josh
