Well, yeah, of course sendmail should be running as root.  That's how it was
intended to run, after all.  That smmsp crap is just a retroactive attempt to
hack around That Which God Intended(tm).

Don't like it?  Evaluate other MTAs.  Postfix will deal gracefully with this
situation.
