Set up something equivalent with different hardware/software and measure it under load with the real task. That's the only easy way to get reliable numbers. Otherwise, you'd better know enough about the task, the hardware, and the OS to feel able to write your own benchmark. Failing that, you can use one of the standard test suites (you could presumably cannibalize the hdparm performance measurement stuff, for example, or Bonnie as Jim mentioned). Also, check the *BSDs for a similar facility to hdparm; they might be easier to compile for Solaris than a Linux utility. But always remember: benchmarks measure the ability of the system to run the benchmark, no more and (if you're lucky) no less. Figuring what, if anything, the numbers mean is _entirely_ the responsibility of the human expert. -- Institute of Policy and Planning Sciences http://turnbull.sk.tsukuba.ac.jp University of Tsukuba Tennodai 1-1-1 Tsukuba 305-8573 JAPAN Ask not how you can "do" free software business; ask what your business can "do for" free software.
