Set up something equivalent with different hardware/software and
measure it under load with the real task.  That's the only easy way to
get reliable numbers.  Otherwise, you'd better know enough about the
task, the hardware, and the OS to feel able to write your own benchmark.

Failing that, you can use one of the standard test suites (you could
presumably cannibalize the hdparm performance measurement stuff, for
example, or Bonnie as Jim mentioned).

Also, check the *BSDs for a similar facility to hdparm; they might be
easier to compile for Solaris than a Linux utility.

But always remember: benchmarks measure the ability of the system to
run the benchmark, no more and (if you're lucky) no less.  Figuring
what, if anything, the numbers mean is _entirely_ the responsibility
of the human expert.
