rm just removes the file from the filesystem tree, but as the pwd can't
be the present working directory if the isn't a directory "ls ." works
but "ls /path/to/folder" doesn't.  You have a reference to the current
working directory even if it is not in the filesystem, but if it is not
in the filesystem you can't dereference it in the filesystem.
