OK, put it back up, made a few *minor* changes:

I would like the old URI to still work, but the following line in my
/etc/apache2/conf/commonapache2.conf (yes, I use Gentoo, hence the strange
filename) does not seem to be working:

Redirect permanent http://www.jmglov.net/docs/kernel-hacking.html http://www.jmglov.net/unix/linux-kernel/

I have tried sticking it at the end of the file (i.e. in the global
context) and inside a <Directory> block all to no avail.

Anyone have any idea why? I am sure that it is (as usual with Apache)
something simple that I am overlooking.
