Microsoft has very little to do with this. As I am sure Dr. Turnbull can back
up, thinner margins on hardware is in keeping with the economic Order of
Things. The natural progression of everything, from an historical perspective,
tends towards Ideas replacing Things as the most valuable commodity.

Hence, software is more valuable than hardware, support is more valuable than
software, etc.

I am over-simplifying quite a bit, but hopefully you see what I am on about.

Also, companies like IBM have economies of scale, which makes it possible for
them to maintain profitability (probably) on manufacturing and selling hard
drives. If you sell a million drives on which your profit margin is but a
dollar, you are still making a million dollars.
