Just the two-penneth here. When I had to use SGI IRIX, I used 'vi' a great deal, and once I got my head around the syntax, it wasn't too bad, but now that I use Gentoo, I use 'nano' quite a bit. As for a GUI text editor, I've been a fan of BBEdit on my Mac for quite about 8 years now.
