Subject: [tlug] Question On Server and Enterprise software ( Happy New Year)

Hi,

Happy New Year to everyone.

1) With Linux, is it advisable to run ftp/ http or any server software on a
regular desktop?

I run my own website by opening up http. I was advised not to run ftp (I have a low
traffic site). I am running Mandrake 9.2 and the Apache server that is on the
CD that I burned as ISO images.
In my situation of running a single website this is all I really need and it works like a charm.

I use the desktop (an old 166!) pretty much as a dedicated server.

2) If so, which are the situations in which we can use a desktop machine as
server and which are the situations in which we should use a server
machine?

As a side comment, I also installed SSH application putty (just google "putty")
and use it to access the server from the web .
You can do this with no problems except I don't start the X server, but stick
with the command line.
It's a little tricky setting up putty but if you need assistance I could help.

Hope this helps.

3) Redhat and Suse come out with server editions like Advanced server ,
Enterprise server. Which are the situations in which they can be used? I
have gone through the site and would really appreciate feedback from a
person with experience on this.

What could be the limitations if I were to use general Linux instead of
these special editions?

Thanks,
Sanjay

P.S: Thanks for all the help in the past
