Thanks to both Joe and Neil. I've managed to avoid references so far but
have just dragged out the dreadful camel book (*) and I've got it now,
thanks.

Just one more question, the programme I'm working on uses 

$qhash_ref->{'spam_ch'} 

but surely the apostrophes aren't required?

$qhash_ref->{spam_ch}
