[tlug] Using Linux for the desktop

Hi All

I managed to win this wonderful little HP laptop
through the Japan Market Entry Competition
(www.jmec.gr.jp). The big problem is it is already
loaded with Windows XP and it didn't come with a CD
driver, DVD driver or , in fact, a Floppy Drive. It
does however have a network card and can make a
connection to the Internet (through the XP OS)

Having used the windows offerings for the past couple
of years, you can probably understand why I want to
give Linux a chance. I have two questions.

1) How can I replace the currently installed Windows
XP with Linux through the network connection to the
internet ? <At some point I know I will have to buy a
CD Rom drive for it......>

2) Windows does come with applications that have
become industry standard ie) office, word, excel,
powerpoint. Do you know if there site that matches
current microsoft products with a Linux equivalent ?
If not do you know an equivalent application for
word, Excel etc etc

very best regards

Graham

PS) Really enjoyed meeting some of the TLUG members
last night, cheers !
