Unicode 1.0 (i.e. 10 years ago) (*) had ALL the kanji in JIS208 and JIS212. In other words about double the variety of kanji available on almost any computer in Japan. There are still lingering xenophobic suspicions about Unicode in Japan, and one hears wierd misinformation about it.
