Thanks Botond,

and the link you provided yesterday really helped.  Creating a  chroot jail
is what I have decided to do, and once I figured out what it was called
thanks to your e-mail, I was able to find lots of info on it.

Those systems were either improperly secured (configured) or the admin
didn't think that giving you broad access to the system would pose a
problem.
Try logging into the sourceforge shell servers if you want to see an
example of tightened security.
