Getting an accurate speed benchmark on the different layouts is hard to do since most dvorak users used qwerty for a long time, but there is a reason why we end up sticking to dvorak. If not faster, its definitely more comfortable and more fun. ;) As for Japanese keyboards, you don't have to worry about the special characters if you just tell the OS to use the layout you want (easier said than done on "certain" OSs though).
